The Future is WOW #11: Changing the Face of EHS
It’s great to see confirmed a fact that you’ve known for a long time already: innovative software solutions are changing the face of EHS, and making workplaces safer. But we also learned a lot of other things that we didn’t know in this week’s roundup!
Electrogeochemistry: the latest in negative emissions technologies
Electrogeochemistry – what a mouthful – describes a new process that can take negative emissions technologies to new heights. This process will capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while also generating hydrogen gas for fuel use, and it has a ton of other useful properties. There has been a lot to do around extracting carbon dioxide from the air and turning it into energy, as it seems like the only way to put climate change to a halt, or at least significantly slow it. The more developments we see in this field, the better for our planet. Tim Stephens gives the scientific explanation on Chem.info.
Improving air quality: a community effort
Many residential rooftops currently hold solar panels, among other green rooftop options, to make a difference in the environment, but we can do more. The 3M Industrial Mineral Products Division has added something else that we can add to rooftops to make a substantial difference, and this time to improve air quality. Their smog-reducing granules are added to roofing shingles in order to turn nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions. With this technology, neighborhoods will be cleaner thanks to each house in it. Find out how it works on Chemarc.
Partially automated UPS warehouse in France
UPS is showing they are at the forefront of technological advancement by opening a $100 million warehouse in France that can process, through automation, a whopping 37,000 packages per hour, while only employing 100 people. This step is part of their initiative to become a stronger player on the European market and to be an innovator when it comes to automated warehouses. Kate Patrick on Supplychaindive gives us the details. More packages more quickly? Sure!
Innovative software solutions do make workplaces safer
“What gets measured, gets managed” is – or should be – the mantra in any workplace. Data management, incident reporting, communication, and much more are all key to improve workplace safety, and all of these things are often done with laborious, time-consuming traditional methods. Smart software solutions streamline these processes and it is shown time and time again that these methods make employees more actively engaged. With these technologies set in place, employees are more likely to report near-incidents or points of risk and feel more in charge of their own safety. Matthew Elson on OHSonline describes how smart software solutions create a workplace culture centered around safety.
