Manufacturing Upgraded #2: Virtual Reality and Fall Protection Training
In this week’s Manufacturing Upgraded, we’re honing in on EHS solutions and tips. We’re going over some OSHA action items to optimize workplace safety, innovative training applications, and more. No, EHS standards can never quite be too high, but we’re sure this post will help you reach them.
Virtual Reality app for specific fall protection training
Using virtual reality, the application developed by the American Society of Safety Professionals is training its users to identify and resolve fall risks. In the VR setting, users explore a two-story building and are asked to find all the fall hazards within. After, they build their own protection system in the simulation and learn all about the different materials, equipment limitations and other important factors in real time. Fall accidents are still one of the most common accidents in construction, and this app is preventing them from happening already. Laurie Cowin on Construction Dive tells us more, including how you can purchase the app.
Putting words into action: 6 OSHA steps
Though a lot is being written on what people should do to ensure a safe work environment, it’s always better to see it accompanied by clear and easy-to-implement actions. William C. Schillaci on EHS Daily Advisor took the most popular guidance publication by OSHA and put the six action items in a row, so no more excuses not to follow them! From collecting everyday data to identifying hazards which can occur in nonstandard situations, all these steps create a neat guide for an EHS professional. Read them here.
When seeking energy savings, investigate the motor efficiency
In the chemical field, motors are often overlooked when considering ways to save energy, yet electric motor systems are responsible for 60% of global electricity use. Costs for electricity will rise, and saving energy is also a critical step towards saving the planet. Tony Young on Chemical Processing gives us some top tips to save energy, which in turn saves other precious resources. Young talks about timing devices, soft starters, not getting tempted by cheap equipment, always using the right motor, and keeping it simple. Read his advice in detail here.
Webinar: e-learning for safety training
