Manufacturing Upgraded #10: Avoiding Holiday Hazards
Has the holiday cheer already started in your workplace? We’re well into December, and everywhere lights and trees are popping up to make those dark days a bit cheerier, and the offices a bit more colorful.
But before you overload your workplace with holiday cheer make sure that the decorations are safe! Read more about it below, but first, let’s talk about the importance of hygiene and prevention.
Cleanliness correlates with happiness
Nine out of ten employees in the manufacturing industry report being happier in a clean work environment. Next to operational efficiency and proper organization of the workplace, cleanliness is a top priority for employees.
Stephanie Valentic also describes how the right tools offered by employers help employees keep their workspaces (and consequently minds) clutter-free. A clean workspace equates to a healthy workplace, one free from distractions.

Prevent lacerations, buy fewer band-aids
Lacerations are one of the most common injuries on the work floor – and not all of them are going to be fixed with a bandage or band-aid. Preventing common injuries saves a lot of time, and a lot of pain; T.J. Simone provides five prevention tips on Manufacturing.net.
Having the right tools, even if they have sharp edges, and maintaining them is the first step to preventing injury. Dull blades are tougher to handle, and therefore much more dangerous than sharp blades in skilled hands. The right protective gear is the next key factor: well-fitting and high-quality goggles and gloves can take you a long way.
The other tips include better training, promoting awareness, and choosing the safest cutting tools. But I’ll spare you the details, they’re right here for you to dig into.
Be merry, but safely
In this season to be jolly, it’s nice to go all out on the decorative front, but in all workplaces, even in the most regular offices, safety still goes first.
EHS Daily Advisor gives you some helpful tips to spread the holiday cheer safely: check cords and plugs of your lights, avoid fire hazards, be aware of labels and risks, and keep access points clear. Those are but a few of many that you can read about here. Enjoy the season!
